Little Sky Farm began in 1985 as a small orchard of 18 apple and pear
trees. Located in a valley in the Santa Cruz Mountains north of Boulder
Creek, California, our three acre farm grows under a little patch of sky
ringed with redwood, douglas fir, live oak, tan oak, and madrone trees
backed by Santa Cruz mountain ridges. In 2004, we started a crop of
unique seed-sown English lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, in an effort
to produce a lavender suitable for cooking. The seeds came from four
distinct stocks, including one from the Provence region of France. In
2005, approximately 1000 plants were put into the ground.
This special seed-sown crop is what sets Little Sky's lavender apart
from the cloned varieties used for making soaps, lotions, etc. A variety
of cultivars have been developed to maximize the production of lavender
oil. Unfortunately, maximizing oil content does not translate into an
herb suitable for cooking.
Our natural, genetically diverse seed-grown crop is lighter, sweeter,
and much better suited to the spice rack than most lavender currently
available.
In 2007, we expanded the farm to include a variety of naturally
grown heirloom tomatoes, decorative flowers, and herbs including basil,
tarragon, mint, thyme, lemon verbena, lemon thyme, chives, savory, and
Greek oregano. Our heirloom tomatoes continue to be popular with local
restaurant chefs and markets. Each year, we continue to expand and
diversify Little Sky Farm with more quality plant varieties for the
kitchen.
Sorry, our farm is closed to the public.
